From Empty Nester to Flower Entrepreneur: My Journey in Growing Seasonal Cut Flowers

Hey there, flower lovers!
Six years ago, we made the big move from sunny Southern California to a new home in the Central Valley that felt like a fresh start. With my kids off making their own adventures, I found myself in the lovely yet quiet phase of being an empty nester. Initially, it felt a bit daunting, but I quickly realized this was the perfect opportunity to explore my passions—and what better way than to dive into the world of flowers?
I've always had a soft spot for arranging blooms, even if I’m no expert. So, I decided to teach myself how to grow seasonal cut flowers by diving headfirst into reading and learning. Fast forward to now, and my garden is bursting with colors from cosmos to zinnias, and a delightful mix of variety in between!

The Joy of Self-Taught Gardening
Being a self-taught novice has its challenges, but it's also incredibly rewarding. I started small, learning about what flowers thrive in my climate and experimenting with different varieties. There’s something magical about watching a seed transform into a beautiful flower, and I often find myself losing track of time in my little patch of paradise.

Turning Passion into Business
As my garden flourished, I realized I could share my love for flowers in a new way: by starting a small business selling them! There’s something incredibly fulfilling about bringing my blooms to the community, whether it’s through local farmers' markets or pop-up shops. Each bouquet I create not only showcases my hard work but also brings a little bit of joy to someone’s day.

Sharing the Blooms
One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been connecting with fellow flower enthusiasts. I love arranging bouquets to gift to friends and neighbors, and hearing their excitement when they receive them. It’s a wonderful way to bond with others who share a passion for gardening and nature, and it helps spread the joy that flowers can bring.

Tips for Fellow Flower Entrepreneurs
If you're thinking about starting your own flower garden—and possibly turning it into a business—here are a few tips from my journey:
-
Start with What You Love: Choose flowers that you adore. This will keep you motivated and excited about your business.
-
Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment: Gardening is all about trial and error. Some plants will thrive, while others may not. Embrace the learning process!
-
Connect with Others: Join local gardening groups or online forums. Networking with fellow entrepreneurs can lead to valuable insights and collaborations.
-
Enjoy the Process: Whether you're planting, watering, or arranging, take the time to enjoy every moment. Gardening and running a business are as much about the journey as they are about the blooms.
So here’s to all the self-taught gardeners and flower entrepreneurs out there! Whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your bloom business, I hope you find joy in nurturing your own little slice of nature.
Happy gardening and happy selling! -Tiena "Tina"
